She then went and downloaded the game from the official FFXIV website and has been able to play fine with the code that steam gave her. Since i already had an account i gave that code to my missus who did exactly that. It added it to my library and gave me a cd code like it did everyone else where you had to go to the Square Enix account page and register that code to create your ffxiv account. My missus also wanted to strat playing, so i bought the game on steam on my steam account. After the steam version was released, i wanted it my steam library due to i like playing my games through steam/origin/uplay. I had to download a client for the game from the official ffxiv website. I started off with the non steam version back when the game released. Steam users can pay for it via mogstation also. It's why only Steam users can pay for their sub via Steam wallet. On top of this, Steam codes for FFXIV are different to physical/non-Steam codes. They mean if you want to continue playing ffxiv on steam then you have to buy the steam version of heavensward as it is a new client, (yes you will have to redownload the whole of FFXIV again, which includes arr and hw) Got a source on that? All they've stated is that users who bought FFXIV on Steam will need to buy Heavensward on Steam. You will just have to play FFXIV outside of steam from then on from the client you download from the official site.
